MPE Resources
Math Testing and Placement offers (2) resources that students may use to prepare for the Math Placement Exam (MPE), which are the Practice Tests and the MDTP Modules.
Practice Tests
MDTP offers two online Practice Tests to help students to understand their readiness for precalculus (Mathematical Analysis Readiness Test) and calculus (Calculus Readiness Test).
These on-line multiple-choice tests may be useful in preparing for some mathematical placement tests used by some California colleges and universities.
Each on-line test includes a diagnostic scoring report to help students identify strengths and weaknesses in some topic areas. These 40 question multiple-choice tests should be taken without a calculator. The recommended time needed for taking each test is approximately one hour, but there is no enforced time limit.
- There is no fee for taking these tests.
- There is no fee for the diagnostic scoring report.
- Nothing is downloaded to your computer.
- No log-ins or passwords are required.
- No data is stored by MDTP.
- The tests can be taken more than once.
Topics covered
The tests cover material through precalculus and trigonometry:
- Exponents and Radicals
- Functions
- Geometric Applications
- Linear Equations and Inequalities, Absolute Values, and their Graphs
- Logarithmic and Exponential Functions
- Polynomials and Polynomial Functions
- Rational Expressions and their Graphs
- Trigonometry
Select from the two available tests below. Note, we recommend students to take the Calculus Readiness Test when preparing for the MPE.
Students might use their results on these practice tests to learn about topics in which they might need additional study or review. The MDTP Learning Modules are aligned to these topics and can be used after students receive their practice tests results.
MDTP Learning Modules
The MDTP Learning Modules were written by MDTP Workgroup members and were informed by diagnostic results from MDTP assessments. These student-centered modules can be used to review content before or after an assessment, prior to entering a new course, and at the direction of their math instructor.
MDTP Learning Modules are designed to support students’ independent practice in the identified MDTP topics.
Each Module is divided into lessons, and each lesson consists of Learning Experiences, which include exploration (Explore), guided examples (Try This!), instructional videos (Watch), making connections (Making Connections) and practice (Practice). The conclusion of each lesson contains an interactive assessment to inform your level of understanding of the content.
